Initial Evaluation of the College of Nursing
on the New Curriculum

In response to the latest CMO on the Nursing Curriculum released last May 2009 by the Commission on Higher Education, the Ateneo de Naga University College of Nursing held a meeting to evaluate the latest CMO. Below is a short and crucial insight on the new curriculum:

The CMO No. 14, s. 2009 is more enriched, enhanced and focused on the competencies of the students under the eleven (11) key areas of responsibility such as safe and quality nursing care, communication, collaboration and teamwork, health education, legal responsibility, ethico-moral responsibility, personal and professional development, quality improvement, research, management of resources and environment, and record management. The professional courses are threaded through the development of the competencies from first year to fourth year level. The venues of the Related Learning Experience are well stipulated.

The cases are decreased to 12 and the completion of these cases are requirements for graduation no by the Professional Regulation Commission.

The freshmen students this school year 2009-2010 are affected by the changes. Normally, major subjects/professional subjects are offered on the 2nd year level but in this new CMO the professional subjects threaded through from first year to fourth year level. Screening of in-coming 1st year students will now be upon entrance to Ateneo de Naga University. There will be proper coordination with the office of the Admission and Aid.

The College of Nursing also carefully formulated a set of suggested action plans focused on different areas of concern namely: 1.) Admission, Selection, Retention of Students, 2.) Facilities and Equipment, 3.) Library, 4.) Student Formation Program, 5.) RLE Concerns, and 6.) Curriculum/Instruction—implementation of the varied approaches and strategies are still ongoing.
