The College of Nursing
Ateneo de Naga University gladly welcomed 440
students to its new Nursing Program last June 7, 2004, the first day of
class.
The College of Nursing is headed by Dean Ma. Clara
LI. Rubino, M.A.N., Ph.D, former Dean of Nursing of Aquinas University
of Legazpi City. Assisting her is Assistant Dean Angelina R. Hermida,
R.N. formerly of Ateneo de Naga University Clinic.
The Commission on Higher Education granted the Ateneo
de Naga the permit to operate the first two years of the nursing course
in June 2004 in its own right – as Ateneo demonstrated compliance
with current requirements of CHED for nursing.
This superceded a previous arrangement whereby Ateneo
de Naga had planned to open nursing as a “satellite campus for nursing”
under the “benefits of autonomy” of the Ateneo de Davao University.
This was because AdNu’s decision to open nursing in late November,
2003 came one month after the strict deadline for submission of application
to open nursing schools. The right to do so under CHED Memo Order 32,
Series of 2001 was recognized by Dr. Peralta. Thus, last December 2004,
the board of Trustees of AdNu’s formally declared AdNu its “satellite
campus for nursing – should this be accepted by AdNu”. AdNu’s
Board immediately accepted the offer.
From January to May, Dr. Patria Manalaysay, AdDu Dean
of Nursing, worked closely with university officials to prepare the university
for nursing.
Even with its autonomous status, Ateneo de Naga and
CHED continue to work together to assure the quality of the Ateneo de
Naga nursing program. This included the preparation of syllabi, the construction
and equipping of the nursing lab, contracts with the base hospital and
other affiliate hospitals, the appointment of academically qualified clinical
instruction and the appointment of local dean.
At present, the College of Nursing is running on smoothly.
Completion of the nursing Skills Laboratory is underway in preparation
for the visit of the Board of Nursing and the Technical Committee on Nursing
Education (TCNE) respectively for another step of evaluation. The nursing
library which occupied the ground floor of the Fr, James O’ Brien,
S.J. Library contains the required 3,000 volumes of books, journals, magazines,
VCD and the like. Ten percent (10%) are professional books and the five
percent (5%) are Filipiniana Collections. The library is open to non-nursing
students.
A line-up of activities for professional growth like,
seminars, trainings, updates, for a, benchmarking, educational tour are
in store fro the faculty members, including the dean and assistant dean.
The office has a competent secretary and a student
assistant. Faculty meetings are held regularly every first Friday of the
month and as the need arises.
Advising and counseling of students are done regularly
every Friday. Moderator of every block was advised to monitor the students
grades and attendance in the different subjects in cooperation with the
teacher of the servicing departments.
The college aims to produce students who are competent,
compassionate committed to the profession.
Statement of Philosophy and
Goals
The establishment
of the Nursing Program of the Ateneo de Naga University is in
pursuit of the mission of the University itself: to be of
service to the community, both local and global, by providing
excellent quality of education in the tradition of Jesuit
education efforts over the centuries and all over the world.
Characteristically, the focus of the program is the total
formation of the students: not only the technical skills and
computer skills, so vital for effective work in today’s
environment. Above all, the program is focused on the values
formation of the student. The be able to situate this service
career in the broader context of one’s personal, spiritual and
religious development, as well as its impact on the care
receivers and the community at large is an important concern of
the program.
The nursing
program relates, in a very direct way, to the ideal presented to
all Ateneo de Naga student: to be men and women for others.
- Apply theory
and safe practice of the comprehensive nursing care to
individual members and families in the community.
- Develop
skills in making sound decision using the problem solving
approach in the nursing processes.
- Critically
analyze family and community situation using skills in
management and community-based approaches.
- Discover
self through enriched and well-planned clinical experiences
in each level.
- Develop good
the0-moral behavior when confronted by ethical dilemmas
related to nursing practice.
